Our 2026 Cup Scores: An Exceptional Natural, and an Honest Look at the Washed Lot

Both of this year’s lots have now been fully analysed and cupped by Dedan Kimathi University’s Institute of Food Bioresources Technology (31 July 2026). We’d rather share the complete picture than just the number that looks best — here’s both.

Natural: 87 SCA

This year’s Natural is the strongest cup we’ve produced. The grader’s own assessment:

“With a cup score of 87, this coffee stands as an excellent specialty-grade cup, distinguished by its elegant floral-fruit character and well-integrated sweetness and acidity.”

In the cup: a delicate fragrance of hibiscus and strawberry, opening into a richer aroma of chocolate and dried fruit. The flavour carries hibiscus florality alongside stone fruit — nectarine and plum — with a sweet, tangy finish and medium-to-high acidity that stays balanced rather than sharp. Moisture measured 10.20%, within specification.

This is a lot we’re genuinely proud to put in front of buyers.

Washed: 83 SCA, Class 4

This year’s Washed lot scored 83 SCA — down from last season’s 85.5. We’re not going to dress that up. The grader described a cup with attractive aromatic complexity undercut by a green, astringent flavour profile and a drying, bitter finish, rated Fair Average Quality.

It’s worth saying plainly: not every harvest produces the same result across both processing methods, and this year the gap between our Natural and Washed lots was real and measurable. We’d rather report that honestly than let a strong Natural score speak for coffee it doesn’t represent.

Moisture on the Washed lot measured 9.80%, within specification. Full lab documentation is available on request for any buyer evaluating either lot.

What this means for buyers

If you’re sourcing for a program built around bright, fruit-forward, technically excellent naturals, this year’s Natural lot is worth a sample. If Washed is your priority, we’d encourage a conversation about timeline and expectations before committing — we’re not going to oversell a Class 4 cup.

Traceability cuts both ways. The same transparency that lets us tell you a Natural scored 87 is what tells you, honestly, when a Washed lot didn’t land where we hoped.
